Heart Association, Mercy College take outreach to barbershops

The American Heart Association and Mercy College of Health Sciences launched a new initiative, Blood Pressure in Barbershops, this month at local barbershops in Des Moines to provide blood pressure readings and educational opportunities.

The awareness outreach program currently focuses on five African American barbershops in the Des Moines area — Platinum Kutz, House of Fades, Universal Kutz, Hilltop Barbershop and Imperial Kutz — as the prevalence of high blood pressure in African Americans in the United States is among the highest in the world. About 72 million people nationwide — or about 1 in 3 Americans — have high blood pressure; more than 40% of non-Hispanic African American men and women have high blood pressure.
