Mercy Students Tie and Deliver Blankets to Des Moines Homeless

Posted by Kevin Kenneally on Mar 15, 2016 4:45:45 PM

In February, Mercy College students, staff, and faculty came together to tie fleece blankets for donation to the homeless who are served by Joppa Outreach’s Winter Heat Team.

In all, 35 members of the College community contributed to the effort, which culminated in the personal delivery of 20 fleece blankets to our homeless neighbors in late February. The blankets were delivered, along with propane tanks, heaters, and coffee,to homeless individuals in Des Moines. All of the individuals who received the blankets were very grateful.

The event was created and sponsored by Katie Lipovac and Rayo Humphrey, Mercy College’s student members of the Iowa College AmeriCorps Program (ICAP). The ICAP, is a community service opportunity for currently enrolled college students in the state of Iowa to connect with their community through service. Students will complete 300 hours of service over a term of one year.

The ICAP students raised necessary funds to purchase 80 yards of fleece fabric by parking cars at Mercy College for the 2016 Winter Jam concert at Wells Fargo Arena.
